The heat seems to want to have it its way. It even wants to break its
old records.
According to the Boston Globe, Tuesday was another day of
incredible heat, forcing school officials to close schools or let the
students leave early. There were also opened some emergency cooling centers to
help those affected by the temperature.
Monday around 3:30 p.m. the temperature in Providence reached 97 degrees, managing to
break the June 9 1984 record. The National Weather Service said that Tuesday was
going to be hot, as well, and it was possible for temperatures to reach 96
degree.
The semi-good news is that the thunderstorms, which were
predicted to come at night, would refresh the region.
While some Cranston schools
have been closed, Pawtucket,
Warwick and Johnston districts released their students early.
Elliot Krieger, a spokesman for the state Department of
Education, said that it was the first time in a long time since Rhode Island schools had
to be closed because of the heat.
The authorities have informed the residents that the humid
air could increase the ozone levels and suggested to avoid driving.
“We are asking all Rhode Islanders to take this extreme
weather seriously and pay attention to the tips so we can all survive the heat
without incident,” said J. David Smith, executive director of the Rhode Island
Emergency Management Agency, according to the Boston Globe.
