A Cincinnati high school that had canceled an upcoming play based on the Agatha Christie novel “Ten Little Indians,” over complaints that the title was racially offensive, has revived the project, which will be performed but with some changes.
The play to be performed by students at the Lakota Public Schools District in suburban Cincinnati is based on a 1939 novel by Agatha Christie titled “Ten Little Niggers” and initially billed by the school as “Ten Little Indians.”
Its title has now been changed to “And Then There Were None,” which is the officially licensed name of the play. The play has been produced in the United States and elsewhere as “Ten Little Indians” and “And Then There Were None,” according to the Associated Press.
The project had received criticism from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in southwest Ohio. Branch president Gary Hines said the original title of the book cannot be ignored, nor can the original book cover drawing of a black man and a noose.
The AP reports that Hines would not comment Thursday on whether his group would oppose the play as it is now planned.
“We were not involved in the discussion of what's going to happen, and all I know is that it's back on again,” Hines told the wire agency. “If they want to be inclusive, why wouldn't they include the group that brought the issue to their attention?”
News that the play would be played under the modified title were confirmed by Superintendent Mike Taylor of the Lakota Public Schools District. He said the play would be performed next month with additional materials, conversations and other activities to honor diversity.
“I believe the best way forward is to allow the performance of the play to occur while using it as a learning vehicle,” Taylor said.
The school had cancelled the play when the NAACP complained. Taylor said school officials have asked for the community's help to stage the play. He added that he appreciates that Hines brought the issue to the district's attention, according to the AP.
The play, about ten strangers stranded on an island who are mysteriously killed one by one, until finally “then there were none,” was scheduled to be performed this weekend.
