"High School Musical 3" Maintains Top Spot At The Box Office

For a second weekend in a row, Disney's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" was the top pick for moviegoers, while Kevin Smith's latest comedy, "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," came in second, box-office tracker Media By Numbers LLC said today in an e-mailed statement.

With $15 million in ticket sales, the preteen-targeting musical starring teen-favorites Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, "High School Musical 3" edged out two new releases, the R-rated comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," and the teen-horror film "The Haunting of Molly Hartley." Despite a flat movie attendance on Friday due to Halloween-related activities, "HSM" rebounded strongly on Saturday, and Sunday business remained brisk increasing the revenues to a total of $61.8 million.

"Zack and Miri," starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as two friends, who do a skin flick to dig themselves out of debt, placed second with $10.7 million while "Haunting" finished in fifth place with $6.01 million.

Slipping one spot to third was the latest horror franchise "Saw V" which raked in $10.1 million, for a total of $45.8 million since its opening, while Angelina Jolie's latest flick "Changeling," Clint Eastwood's drama about a mother desperate to find her missing boy moved up fourth, earning $9.4 million. The movie opened the previous weekend in a limited run. The other major newcomer, Freestyle Releasing's "The Haunting of Molly Hartley," took the fifth spot with $6 million, meeting expectations.

After a big surge the previous weekend, Hollywood revenues plunged. The top 12 movies took in $75.2 million, off 38 percent from the same weekend last year, when "American Gangster" opened with $43.6 million and "Bee Movie" debuted with $38 million.
On the other side of the pond, the latest installment of the James Bond series, "Quantum of Solace," debuted on the top spot with record-breaking numbers. The movie took in $38.6 million this weekend in three countries: England, France and Sweden. The film debuted to $25.3 million in England, the biggest debut ever in the U.K.
