The successful debut of Warner Bros.' romantic comedy “He’s Just Not That Into You” marked Jennifer Aniston’s second No. 1 movie over the past couple of months, following her previous movie “Marley and Me” released on Christmas Day.
Whether it was for its star-studded cast or its relationships theme, “He’s Just Not That Into You,” drew a huge crowd over the weekend taking in a total of $27.4 million in ticked sales.
Based on Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo's popular relationship advice book, the multilayered story follows the lives of nine interconnected Baltimore residents making their way through relationships. During a 2 hour run, the chick flick covers pretty much all the basics on today’s estrangement in relationships between men and women.
Following the footsteps of “Sex and the City,” “Twilight” and “Mamma Mia!,” “He’s Just Not That Into You” is the latest movie led by female stars to achieve box office success.
“Women continue to drive box office in a big way,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media by Numbers. “And we still continue to, mistakenly, underestimate the power of the female audience.”
The movie whose cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Connelly knocked off the previous weekend's top flick, the abduction thriller starring Liam Neeson, “Taken,” which dropped to second place with $20.3 million. Regardless of the mixed reviews it received, the kidnapping film earned $53.4 million in 10 days.
Scoring big points among audiences was the animated film “Coraline,” based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name, with a nice $16.3 million.
Wrapping up the top five was Steve Martin’s comedy “The Pink Panther 2” on fourth with $12 million and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” which is closing in on $100 million.
