Justine Henin completed a nearly perfect performance by wining the final of the US Open 6-1, 6-3 against Svetlana Kuznetsova to claim the seventh Grand Slam trophy of her career.
The No. 1 Belgian won her second Grand Slam title in the Williamses' backyard, where Venus and Serena had combined for four titles, and it’s the first tennis player to defeat the two sisters and then go on to win the title.
The 25-year-old is also the first woman to win the U.S. Open without losing a set since 2002, when Serena Williams, who has eight Grand Slam titles, accomplished the feat
"The quality I played in the last few matches is amazing," said Henin. "It's just a great feeling because I had a tough draw and I had a lot of things to prove to myself — to myself, no one else. I've been so consistent for two weeks, so calm, so relaxed. It's just great what I accomplished, and I'm really proud of it."
The Belgian was in control from the start, breaking Kuznetsova's serve in the opening game of the match and repeating the feat in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Kuznetsova showed more passion as the second set started, although a number of unforced errors continued to obstruct her efforts.
The fourth game proved decisive as the 22-year-old Russian had chances to level the set only to squander them with some sloppy strokes.
Apart from Henin’s three double faults in one game close to the end, the Belgian was consistently several classes above the Russian who lifted the trophy three years ago.
Henin's triumph came after top seed Roger Federer and No. 3 Novak Djokovic advanced to the men's final with straight-set wins.
The No.1 Swiss will seek his fourth consecutive title today after beating Nikolay 7-5, 6-1, 7-5 and the 22-year-old Djokovic ousted Spain's David Ferrer 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 to become the youngest U.S. Open finalist since Pete Sampras won in 1990 at age 19.
