Race driver Helio and his professional dance partner Julianne Hough won a perfect score of 30 for their final and decisive dance on the show's season finale Tuesday night. While Mel B and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy also won top marks from the judges, the viewers, who account for 50 percent of the overall score, helped the racing driver win.
"It feels totally different from winning a race," Castroneves was quoted as saying after the show. "I wasn't kidding. This goes right between my two Indy trophies. Otherwise, it would have been a big blank space."
Melanie Brown and her professional partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, earned 55 out of a possible 60 points for their cha-cha and freestyle dances during Monday's competition, with Castroneves coming in second with 54 points and Osmond ranking last with 46 judge-awarded points.
Helio Castroneves, who seems to be a natural for dancing, prompting judge Carrie Ann Inaba to call him "ridiculously good," rightfully won this season's finale.
"It's out of my element," Castroneves earlier said of dancing. "I listen as much as I can to my partner. She's amazing. This is her territory," he said of Julianne Hough. "She also pushes to the limits to see how far I can go," he added. "She sees that, and when she sees I'm beyond my limits, she changes it to make it a little better."
Hélio Castroneves was actually named Hélio Castro Neves, but changed his name to Castro-Neves and then to Castroneves after being repeatedly misidentified by U.S. media as "Helio Neves." He is nicknamed "Spider-Man" because of the form of victory celebration he introduced, in which he climbs the track-side debris fence.
Castroneves debuted in 2001 in IndyCar and is frequently among the top drivers in the race. He won the 2001 & 2002 Indianapolis 500. Since 2006, Castroneves uses a Honda engine in his car and a Dallara chassis. Helio Castroneves currently lives in Miami, Florida with his fiancée Aliette (Ali) Vazquez.
