Helio Claims This Season's Dancing Trophy

The coveted mirror-ball trophy of this season’s “Dancing with the Stars” contest went to Brazilian race car driver Helio Castroneves Tuesday night, who out-danced fellow competitors Melanie Brown and Marie Osmond.

With Marie Osmond voted off ABC’s hit show “Dancing With the Stars” Monday night, it was up to Spice Girl Mel B and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves to battle it out among themselves.

Helio and professional dance partner Julianne Hough won a perfect score of 30 for their final and decisive dance on the show's season finale Tuesday night. While Mel B and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy also won top marks from the judges, the viewers, who account for 50 percent of the overall score, helped the racing driver win.

“It feels totally different from winning a race,” Castroneves was quoted as saying after the show. “I wasn't kidding. This goes right between my two Indy trophies. Otherwise, it would have been a big blank space.”

The 32-year-old thus became the fourth consecutive male to win the ballroom dance competition. “I hope Mel B calls me to give me tickets to the Spice Girls concert,” he humorously remarked after the show.

Mel B herself was clearly disappointed with the result. She had long been expected to win the competition and was a favorite of the judges. Monday, Scary Spice said, “Coming in second or third is not an option for me. I like to start something and finish it right on top.”

After hearing she had lost, Mel B said she had “enjoyed all of it.” The singer had had hopes of winning the hearts of American viewers as well: “To be embraced by America, would be... I would actually be speechless.”

She will be able to console herself with the upcoming Spice Girls reunion tour, which starts off Sunday in Vancouver, Canada.

Entertainer Marie Osmond also looked like a sure-winner for a while, as fans voted enthusiastically for her. She managed to remain on the show despite her father’s death earlier this month and having her son check into rehab.

Other competitors on this season’s competition were “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” actress Jane Seymour, soap actor Cameron Mathison, “90210, Beverly Hills” actress Jennie Garth, boxing champ Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Cheetah Girls member Sabrina Bryan, among others.
