Helio Castroneves Cha-Cha-Charged For Tax Fraud

The dancing Brazilian Helio Castroneves got caught while trying to dance around the tax laws and was accused of using offshore accounts to hide millions of dollars in income from the Internal Revenue Service. Apparently he was either unfamiliar with the laws here in the US, either he figured those millions that should have gone to the government would serve him better. We all know how expensive those glittery tight dancing costumes can be!

Castroneves, 33, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was charged with conspiracy and six counts of tax evasion for purportedly failing to report to the IRS about $5.5 million in income between 1999 and 2004, according to court documents. As each count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence, he faces a cool 30 years in prison, if convicted on all counts.

Along with him, sister and business manager Katiucia Castroneves, 35, as well as their attorney, Alan R. Miller, 71, of Birmingham, Mich are also facing charges. The three of them reportedly pulled a tax-dodging scheme and managed to make $5.5 million disappear from the face of the earth by transferring them into a Swiss bank account controlled by the siblings.

The recently divorced Helio failed to report to the IRS huge amounts of his income between 1999 and 2004, according to court documents. He now lives alone in a luxurious villa in Coral Gables, valued at about $2.3 million

Castroneves is a well-known auto racing driver that fans refer to with the nickname "Spider-Man," because of the form of victory celebration he introduced, in which he climbs the track-side debris fence. He has won the Indianapolis 500 in 2000 and 2001, setting the record for the youngest driver (he was 27 at that time) to win the famous race twice. In the North American IndyCar Series he managed to achieve a total of 18 wins and 43 poles, as well as championship point finishes ranging from second to sixth in a complete season of racing.

But aside from his speedy adventures, he became generally famous to the reality TV lovers, thus the entire country, as a contestant in the hit show “Dancing With The Stars,” where he and partner Julianne Houghwon won the crystal ball trophy of the fifth season last November.

Castroneves has reportedly signed on with "Entertainment Tonight" to be a correspondent for some episodes of this year's "Dancing With the Stars" show, but he could be transmitting live from behind the bars, as IRS officials seem very keen on getting justice well served: "This case sends a clear message that the IRS is committed to vigorously enforcing the tax laws and stopping offshore tax evasion," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.
