The union between "The Hills" stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt is yet to be legalized, after the latter backed out of the courthouse wedding ceremony that would have made his Mexican marriage to Heidi legal, during last night's season finale of the reality show.
Having your "wedding photo" spattered all over some celebrity magazine cover and caught on tape for a fake reality show hardly means much in legal terms.
A month after Spencer and Heidi made headlines for eloping in Mexico, the pair was supposed to become husband and wife officially. When it came down to saying "I do," Spencer suffered a change of heart and said he wants to give his future wife the wedding she deserves complete with family guests, who were absent from their first and way more romantic union on the beach.
"I feel like we're doing something sneaky and shady," he told his tearful bride-to-be. "I just want to give you the wedding of your dreams that you have been talking about for three years."
When the two started presenting themselves as newlyweds all over the media, questions began to arise that their marriage was anything but that. No one could find any record of a marriage license being filed under Pratt or Montag, though Spencer repeatedly insisted to the media that was because he'd checked the "confidential" box when they filed.
Family and friends of the couple were shocked to learn about the wedding, and Heidi's mom even accused Spencer of plotting the whole thing. Asked about the technical status of the couple's union, Heidi's sister Holly Montag said she had no idea whether it was legal or not.
Luckily, two people don't need to be married to start having babies, which is what the couple is planning to do next. Before Monday's "Hills" episode, Heidi and Spencer called into Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM show and revealed that want to have a kid as soon as possible, which may be less than five years. Elaborating on the timetable, Heidi said the two have been talking about it but they'll have to see what happens next.
