Thomas Beatie, who was born a woman but went through a sex change, is pregnant again, he told Barbara Walters during an interview set to air on TV on Friday.
Ten years ago, Beatie, who is legally a man, had a sex-change operation. He had a chest reconstruction and took testosterone in order to develop masculine traits. 34-year-old Tracy Lagondino kept her ovaries and uterus, the specific female organs that helped him become pregnant.
After conceiving her through artificial insemination using donor sperm and Beatie’s own eggs, the transgender welcomed a baby girl on June 29 at an Oregon hospital. Following the birth of Susan (as the baby was named), Beatie didn’t go back on the testosterone treatment so as to became pregnant again. And he did.
Currently in his first trimester, the controversial “pregnant man,” as the media dubbed him before delivering Susan, told Barbara Walters that the new bundle of joy is due on June 12. "I feel good. I had my checkups with my hormone level, as far as the hCG. And everything is right on track," he said.
Nancy Beaty, 46, Thomas’s wife for five years, couldn’t become pregnant due to a hysterectomy made in the past. This is what made the transgender take the decision of having a baby himself, by means of artificial insemination.
After learning that they will have a baby, the couple chose to “tell our story from our own mouths before it got out. Hiding a pregnant man is like hiding an 800-pound gorilla," Thomas Beatie said
