Mourners at Hollywood actor Heath Ledger’s funeral in Perth on Saturday celebrated his life by stripping off and diving into the surf at his favorite beach, reports said Sunday.
More than 500 people, many from Hollywood and other from Australia sports, business, arts and entertainment worlds gathered Saturday afternoon to pay their respects to the one who finally seem to find his rest after days of endless speculations on his death.
The service was held at the exclusive Penrhos College in Perth where Heath used to come when he was a child to watch his older sister, Kate performing in school plays.
The memorial service was followed by a private funeral at Fremantle Cemetery attended by 10 people, including Heath’s parents and Williams. There Heath’s cremated remains were laid to rest in eternal peace.
Then mourners gathered at a restaurant overlooking Perth’s Cottesloe beach, one of Heath’s favorite spots, for a sunset wake.
There, about 50 people took off some of their clothes and ran into the water to wash their tears in hugs and cheers celebrating Heath’s life, local Sydney Morning Herald reported. Michelle Williams, Heath’s former fiancée and the mother of their two-year old daughter, Matilda Rose was among them. She was photographed smiling in her delicate cream dress soaking wet.
“It’s what Heath would have wanted,” one mourner was quoted by the newspaper.
Kate, Heath’s older sister also took a dive into the water, while Kim, Heath’s father watched everything from the restaurant’s balcony and shouted, "Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!" giving two thumbs up in the air.
After the dive, the swimmers came on the shore and watched how the sun was setting down, still embracing one another.
“The sun goes down on our love. But it will never go down on Heathy,” two mourners near Williams said.
