Heath Ledger's Co-Stars' Touching Tribute To His Daughter

Hollywood actors Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, who took the challenge to complete the movie Heath Ledger left unfinished, "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus," refused to pick up their paychecks, asking that the money be sent to Ledger's daughter Matilda instead.

The kind gesture came out of concern for little Matilda's future after her father's sudden death found her excluded from his will, which he didn’t update after her birth. The celebrity trio, who took Ledger's place in his final film, decided that his two-year-old daughter, who lives with her mother, actress Michelle Williams, should have their paychecks, British newspaper The Sun reported.

"They didn’t take money — it goes to Heath’s daughter," confirmed "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" director Terry Gilliam. That’s extraordinary! And wonderful… and when you’re part of that, you think, ‘Ah, this is maybe why I went into the movies in the beginning. I thought it would be full of wonderful people.’ And we’ve got a movie full of wonderful people who did extraordinary things to help."

Matilda's claim to Ledger's entire estate, likely to be worth up to $20 million, is yet to be decided in a Perth court. At the time of his death, Ledger had around $145,000 in New York assets, including a $25,000 Toyota Prius, $100,000 shared in various bank accounts and about $20,000 in furniture and fixtures. Immediately after the actor's will was revealed, leaving everything to his parents, Ledger's father, Kim, announced that Matilda "is our absolute priority and Michelle is an integral part of our family. They will be taken care of and that’s how Heath would want it to be."

Meanwhile, "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus," written and directed by Gilliam, who hasn't been known to make commercially-friendly movies since his 1995 hit "Twelve Monkeys," is reportedly having a challenge finding distribution in the U.S. according to the Hollywood Reporter. Despite the fact that Gilliam left Heath Ledger's scenes in the film, studios are timid to sign on to the latest from the "stubbornly noncommercial" director.

"In this market, unless I have a reason to think a movie like this is going to be a slam dunk I'm not going to take a flyer on it, even with Heath Ledger," an unnamed source told the Hollywood Reporter.

Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell were recruited to play Ledger's character, "Tony," in the film, two months following Ledger's premature death from a combination of prescription drugs.

The move was possible because the script had Ledger’s character travel to three magical worlds through a magical mirror; in each world he was be incarnated by one of the three actors.

In the meantime, Ledger's final completed movie, Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," is rewriting the box office history rising to the second spot of the domestic box office, surpassing "Star Wars" with a total of $471.5 million.
