Heath Ledger was posthumously honored at the 50th Australian Film Institute Awards at Melbourne’s Princess Theater Saturday. The late Ledger was given the international award for actor for his role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."
Besides the local film and TV production, the Australian Film Institute also honors the Australian actors who go on to star in international fare. This year, Heath Ledger received the award over Eric Bana ("The Other Boleyn Girl"), Russell Crowe ("American Gangster") and Jack Thompson ("Leatherheads").
However, it is not the first time Ledger receives this award. He also won it in 2006 for his performance in "Brokeback Mountain." The actor was also nominated for an Oscar for that role.
Heath Ledger’s father Kim, mother Sally and sister Kate accepted the award from actor Michael Caton. The three received standing ovations from the crowd in Melbourne's Princess Theatre.
“It's been without a doubt the most difficult year, losing such a loved family member,” said Kate Ledger, fighting back tears, ABC News reported.
The equivalent award for international Australian actress was given to Cate Blanchett. Her performance in “Elizabeth:The Golden Age" won her the prize over Nicole Kidman ("The Golden Compass"), Judy Davis ("The Starter Wife") and Emmy nominee Rachel Griffiths ("Brothers & Sisters").
The winner of the 50th Australian Film Institute Awards was "The Black Balloon." The movie had earned 11 nominations and converted 5 of them into awards: best picture, director (Elissa Down), original screenplay (Elissa Down & Jimmy The Exploder), supporting actor (Luke Ford), and supporting actress (Toni Collette).
“The Castle” was declared Australia’s favorite film of all time.
