Elisabeth Hasselbeck, “The View” co-host well known for her conservative opinions, compared her infamous on-air quarrel with Rosie O’Donnell to playing softball.
The 30-year-old co-host of ABC talk show “The View” is pregnant with her second child, due in November. She recently granted an interview to Pregnancy magazine in its November issue, where she talks about her job and about motherhood.
Elisabeth and former “View” co-host Rosie O’Donnell had an infamous fight on the show earlier this year, regarding their antithetic political views. Apparently the issue of the Iraq war was fuel enough for the two women to flame up.
Elisabeth tells Pregnancy magazine that her past as a softball player – she was captain of the softball team in college, reports People.com – helped her maintain calm during her quarrel with Rosie.
“I almost had the same feeling in me as when I had a championship [softball] game and I was up to bat and the pressure was on. I'm very lucky that tears didn't come out ... Unfortunately when a woman cries, it's never seen as a sign of strength and never seen in a positive light.”
Rosie left “The View” in May, a step she intended to take anyway but which occurred quicker than planned, due to the angry exchange of words with Elisabeth.
Says the pregnant co-host: “Being a conservative mother isn't the challenge. Being a conservative in New York City on television is the challenge.”
Elisabeth and her husband of five years, New York Giants quarterback Tim Hasselbeck, are also parents to Grace, 2. The new pregnancy was announced in April.
“I had more reassurance and affirmation as to why I have felt the things I've felt for a long time,” she tells the magazine of getting pregnant. “And as a mom, now I want to make sure that the decisions I'm making and the votes that I'm casting are going to create long-term benefits for Grace and my next child and hopefully more to come after that.”
Elisabeth’s conservative views recently came in the spotlight again when singer Barry Manilow refused to appear on the show earlier this month, reportedly because the producers had not respected his demand of being interviewed by someone other than Elisabeth.
He said he cannot possibly “compromise” his own democratic opinions.
