The fifth long awaited Harry Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," cashed in $12 million at midnight screenings in the US.
2,311 theaters in North America were flooded by moviegoers on late Tuesday/early Wednesday for the screening of the fifth installment of the Harry Potter series dropping an estimated $12 million, which according to Daily Variety, is the most made at the box office for a Wednesday opening midnight run.
"I was out last night, and I saw lines of kids in tents," Exhibitor Relations' Jeff Bock was quoted by E! Online as saying regarding the scene outside an "Order of the Phoenix" theater in suburban Los Angeles.
Previously, the midnight premier record was set by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2003 which made $8 million.
Internationally, "Order of the Phoenix" was just as forceful as it was in the US taking in $13.7 million from France and eight Pacific and Asian territories, including Australia, Reuters reported.
According to online ticket company Fanango.com, "Harry Potter" is already outselling summer hits "Spiderman 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End". In 2005, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" made $6 million on its premier night.
