Very disappointing news for all Harry Potter fans out there: there will be no Harry Potter movie in November this year, Warner Bros. studios announced.
With no more official Potter books to be released, fans are still counting on the movies for their dose of the teenage wizard's adventures, but due to recent developments in the movie industry, "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" was pushed back by eight months, to July 2009.
The president of studio Warner Bros Alan Horn, said the reason why they have decided to postpone the movie's release is to assure the studio a major summer blockbuster in 2009. Another reason was this winter's writers' strike which had a negative impact on the movie industry overall.
"Our reasons for shifting Half-Blood Prince to summer are twofold," Horn said Thursday. "We know the summer season is an ideal window for a family tent pole release, as proven by the success of our last Harry Potter film, which is the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, behind only the first installment."
Based on J.K. Rowling's popular novel, the fifth movie of the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," which was released on July 11 last year, grossed $292 million in the U.S.
Describing the movie as "fabulous," Horn added that he had seen the film, which is in the final production stages, and that it would "absolutely have been ready" by November.
"We are still feeling the repercussions of the writers strike, which impacted the readiness of scripts for other films -- changing the competitive landscape for 2009 and offering new windows of opportunity that we wanted to take advantage of," Horn added. "We agreed the best strategy was to move 'Half-Blood Prince' to July, where it perfectly fills the gap for a major tentpole release for midsummer."
Nevertheless, the studio's sudden change of plans will not alter in any way plans for the final, two-part Potter movie adventure, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," based on the seventh book, which was launched last summer. The release date for part one is tentatively set for November 2010.
Trailers for "Half-Blood Prince" began running last week in advance of the expected November movie release worldwide. Merely a teaser, the 1 minute 30 second video doesn’t uncover too many things, focusing instead on young Tom Riddle, who later took the name of Lord Voldemort.
The switch means a two-year lag between the film adaptations of books five and six in J.K. Rowling's fantasy series. But it will shorten fans' wait between "Half-Blood Prince" and the final two installments, which are being shot simultaneously next year.
In the meantime, Warner Bros studios are still enjoying the success of "The Dark Knight," starring Christian Bale as Batman and Heath Ledger as the Joker. Since its release, the grim super-hero movie raked in $452 million in the U.S., becoming the second-highest grossing film ever.
