Following “Harry Potter’s” release postponement to the
summer of 2009, another film adaptation of a best-selling novel will take the
date that “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” previously held. According
to Summit Entertainment, “Twilight,” the studio’s adaptation of Stephenie
Meyer’s 2005 eponymous novel, will debut on the big screens on November 21.
“When Warner Bros. decided to move “Harry Potter and the
Half-Blood Prince” to the summer of 2009, we saw a unique opportunity to slot
in our film which has been gaining tremendous awareness and momentum over the
past several months,” said Rob Friedman, co-chairman and chief executive of
Summit Entertainment, as quoted by Newsday.
Furthermore, Rob Friedman said that “Twilight” was not at
all going all-out to overtake or replace the delayed sequel of the “Harry
Potter” franchise, but that the studio decided to bring Stephenie Meyer’s fans the
much-waited-for movie as fast as possible.
The upcoming production, directed by Catherine Hardwicke,
portrays a 17-year-old girl, Isabella Swan, impersonated by Kristen Stewart,
moving to a small town so as to live with her father. She subsequently falls in
love with an enigmatic classmate, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), who proves
to be a 108-year-old vampire. In spite of his immortal nature, he can’t resist
her, and their love story brings them nothing but curses and bad luck.
The last book in the “Twilight” series, “Breaking Dawn,” was
released previously this month and was accompanied by a Harry Potter-like
success.
At first, the movie had been scheduled to race against 20th
Century Fox’s remake of 1951’s “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” However, a new
release date brings different opponents. “Twilight” will face competition from
the animated feature “Bolt,” which also had its released date changed from
November 26 to November 21.
