Hanna is the eighth tropical storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season as it formed in the western Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Centre. Hanna was located around 300 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, moving west-northwest at about 12 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph. Hanna may produce rainfall of between 1 to 4 inches across parts of the Leewards, according to several forecasters.
The National Hurricane Center expects Hanna to turn toward the northwest later today and to be centered well to the northeast of the Bahamas during the next couple of days. It is still unknown whether Hanna will affect the U.S. However, the system could strengthen into a hurricane with winds of about 80 mph over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Gustav made Louisiana call a state of emergency and put the National Guard on standby. It is currently approaching Jamaica.
