Days after the official launch of the 3G iPhone, the guys
who goes under the name of iPhoneDev Team have released their jailbreak tool
for the iPhone OS 2.0. According to the iPhoneDev blog, Pwnage 2.0 enables
iPhone and iPod touch users to jailbreak their devices’ software. For the time
being, Pwnage can only jailbreak the new 3G iPhone; the unlock ability will be
added later on.
Very few problems have been reported so far; people
generally seem to be quite satisfied with the results of their newly jailbroken
or unlocked devices.
However, the value iPhoneDev’s latest trick is quite questionable,
because Apple has already launch the App Store. So, why jailbreak an iPhone,
when one can find a lot of applications right in Apple’s Store?
Launched last week, the AppStore provides users with 550
new, free or very cheap, iPhone or iPod Touch-compatible programs. The search, download and install
operations are as accessible as they come. Out of the 550, there are a few
special ones that stand out.
AOL Radio, for instance, can be downloaded for free and
grants users access to more than two hundred Internet radio stations. In the
same music category, users can go for Pandora as well. As the playlist
advances, listeners use a rating system which will eventually make the radio
station deliver more and more of the songs the users liked.
iPhone users can now add an instant messaging program as
well on their devices. It was said to come with a few minor problems, but they
will surely be taken care of very soon.
As the iPhone can only take stills, the video recording
feature has been highly anticipated. For now, it is only available as a hack,
but the company announced that iPhoneVideoRecorder will soon find its way to
the App Store.
As for the unlock feature which will be added to Pwnage 2.0
at a later date, it might be useful, but Apple is already trying to push its
device on all the markets and to as many mobile carriers as possible.
Speaking of which, MacWorld
has an interesting article about Apple’s efforts to bring its iPhone on the
Chinese market. Apple opened on July 19 its first store in Beijing and other will follow soon.
Apple officials confirmed that the 3G iPhone will be also be
available in China,
but they declined to indicate a date or to comment about the status of the
negotiations between Apple and China Mobile.
However, according to the figures released by In-Stat, there
are already 400,000 to 1 million iPhones in China.
