The HTC-Google collaboration is definitely going forward, but at a faster pace this year. The Taiwanese mobile phones maker said it will launch at least three more Android handsets this year, the company’s chief executive officer Peter Chou told the audience at a Merrill Lynch technology conference.
The new handsets will be launched in order to support the mobile platform developed by Google. As for the T-Mobile G1, Chou said the device was a success. It was well received and sold over 1 million units since it was released.
One of the three new handsets from HTC has already been showcased by the company. The HTC Magic, considered the G2, is an enhanced version of the G1, but without the physical QWERTY keyboard which was replaced with a touch-heavy interface. The Magic was unveiled at the GSMA for Europe, so the Taiwan-based mobile phone producer will launch at least two more Android phones.
Mr. Chou announced that there are plans to launch at least three Android phones this year when a reporter at the conference in Taipei, Taiwan, asked him whether the rumors that HTC plans to launch five Android phones in 2009 were true.
Unfortunately, the HTC executive did not give details about the upcoming smartphones. He did, however, underlined the fact that HTC plans to focus on the Chinese market this year.
"This is an important year for our entry into China, especially with China's release of [third-generation mobile phone] licenses," Mr. Chou told the Wall Street Journal.
"We hope to have a breakthrough in China this year after entering the Europe and U.S. markets."
