“High School Musical” was one of 2006’s hit television
films, produced by Disney Channel. It was the first Disney Channel Original
movie broadcast on BBC. Being a musical, it benefited from an awesome
soundtrack, which became the best selling album in the U.S. in 2006.
The plot isn’t terribly imaginative, and is rather one among numerous
adaptations of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”.
In a nutshell, the main characters – Troy
the sensitive jock and Gabriella the beautiful dork meet at a ski lodge and
sing together, thus discovering their shared passion for music. When the school
year begins, Gabriella and her mother move to the same town and at the same
school as Troy.
They both want to take part in their high school musical, and their unity
divides the school.
Their cliques – the “jocks” and the “dorks” – rivals from times immemorial,
finally end up burying the hatchet at the end of the movie. The movie is yet
another moral story about appearances, cliques, true love and teenagers.
There’s nothing excitingly new except that it’s a musical – and according to
viewers, quite a successful one – so much so, that “High School Musical 2” was
released in 2007, “High School Musical 3” will hit the silver screen this month
and there’s talk about a fourth installment of the popular movie.
“High School Musical 3” is anticipated with much excitement,
but also with high expectations. The movie will focus on the senior year of the
teenagers from the previous movies, and it’s trying to bring the musical genre
back into the younger audience’s preferences. One of its underlying purposes is
to make boys dancing seem ordinary and perhaps “cool” – and not only in the United States,
but worldwide. The movie gives people the sense of belonging and the desire to
belong to a world like that portrayed in “High School Musical”. It’s an island
of optimism and positivism in a sea of disappointment and separation.
