HP Offers New Batteries and a Greener Life

Hewlett-Packard promised to its customers that the notebooks they produce will also be available with an option of a novel lithium ion battery. The special things about this type of battery are that it charges quicker than the normal one and it also lives longer than other batteries.

HP will make a change to the Sonata battery originally released by Boston-Power and will call it HP Enviro. In addition, the new battery will have a warranty for three years. The company’s analysts believe that this new change will cover nearly 80% of the HP notebooks. HP also expects to charge a premium of almost 20% for the new batteries.

Yet, the company didn’t make it clear on one thing: whether they will offer the notebook together with an optional pack of the HP Enviro or the battery will be as a standard component for any of its systems. But the main thing is that HP considered doing this and the production capacity may represent a startup.

Boston-Power produces 300,000 cells every month in a factory run by Gold Peak Industries Ltd. of Hong Kong in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Christina Lampe-Onnerud, chief executive and founder of Boston-Power, stated that they are a “small player,” but that the notebook industry uses almost a billion battery cells every year.

She added that the company’s biggest wish is to grow the capacity of manufacturing and to maintain the cells’ quality. The company released the Sonata battery in February 2007 and it first went to HP consumers. The new Sonata will now represent a new design by using a new cell type which will help in providing faster charges and longer lifecycles.
