Hewlett-Packard announced on Monday that it has launched an application that allows users to print pictures wirelessly from an iPhone. The app is called iPrint Photo and it basically allows pictures stored on an iPhone to be printed using HP's inkjet printers attached to a Wi-Fi network. Of course, users can select a photo by touching it. The print command is sent to the inkjet printer over a Wi-Fi network. In addition, this software also runs on the iPod Touch device. Currently, the app only enables 4-by-6-inch photo prints and resizes images accordingly.
However, there are some disadvantages, even if the app is really useful. Only JPEG images are printed, and HP says the app does not support any other image or documents format for now. In addition, the printing may also be cancelled if a user receives a call or a text message on the iPhone. Anyway, the app has been well-received by iPhone users, even if it has limited capabilities. The iPhone's camera is still a problem that needs to be solved, because it's really not a high resolution one.
Another problem would be the fact that the app only supports HP printers. Additional features and functionality will be decided with future versions of the software, which will be released soon. This new technology will be on display at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and Macworld. Both of them will be held next month. The app is available for download from the App Store for free. Several companies have announced their intentions of developing a software similar to HP's, and it remains to be seen which one will take the top spot in this domain.
