Since the North American market seems to be pretty busy
these days with the entire T-Mobile G1 commotion, there’s probably little room
left to make any smartphone announcements at this point.
So HP took the matter to Europe, where Vodafone will begin
selling the iPAQ Voice Messenger and Data Messenger smartphones this November. The
first country to see the models will be the UK, but other countries are
expected to soon follow.
The prices will range from $570 for the iPAQ Voice
Messenger, to $680 for the iPAQ Data Messenger, prices that are not necessarily
justifiable, especially considering the two models bring absolutely nothing
impressive to a market that is already overwhelmed with smartphone offers.
As non-impressive as they may be, that won’t stop Vodafone
from selling them, so here is what Europeans will get: the iPAQ Voice Messenger
comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA display, as well as a QWERTY keypad, more condensed than you would expect.
Furthermore, the iPAQ Data Messenger comes with a
touch-screen and a sliding QWERTY keyboard, has a 3-megapixel camera, and
offers GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth integrated capabilities.
It sounds like nothing we haven’t seen before, and even more
than that, it sounds like a shy attempt to show that there’s more to the
smartphone market than Apple’s iPhone, Google’s G1 or BlackBerrys. But is
there?
So far, it’s no secret that smartphones usually arrive on
the European market with much higher prices, but just as a personal opinion, this
is exaggerated, and perhaps buying a BlackBerry, an iPhone or even waiting a
bit longer for a G1 isn’t such a bad idea for European consumers.
