HBO’s newest show is a seven-part miniseries called Generation Kill, based on the book with the same name, which presents a group of marines at the beginning of the Iraq war.
The series presents a powerful authenticity feel, which is exactly what its producers, who also released the highly acclaimed crime series The Wire, were looking for. In order to provide a genuine set of information, they called on Eric Kocher, military consultant, whose contribution was extremely useful during the making of the series.
The show’s co-executive producer, Mr. David Simon said: "I want everybody to watch it," he says. "I'm not interested in preaching to a choir of those opposed to the Iraq mission, or merely validating the adventure of that mission by telling the tale of these young Marines. Regardless of whether they believe this to be the right war at the right time (or not), I'd like people to think clearly about the nature of modern war itself, and to acknowledge, at least, that whether it's justified or not, war is hardly as clean, precise and clinical as we wish to imagine it," as quoted by MercuryNews.
The new detailed perspective on the war issues will surely make the show a hit, as the matters presented deal with a very sensitive topic, which many feel very close to.
The general source of information was journalist Evan Wright’s award-winning book, that offers an inside look at a group of young marines from the Bravo Platoon of the First Reconnaissance Battalion, located in Iraq. The book was extremely appreciated especially due to its detailed presentation, which has a strong documentary-like feel.
