If you are a movie addict, the
HBO on Broadband service offered by Time Warner Cable will give you access to
400 hours of downloadable movies and TV series for no additional fees. The catch
is however that you have to be a Time Warner Cable Inc. subscriber, both for
digital cable TV and Internet services. And if you want that to become a
reality starting this Tuesday, you’re going to have to move to Milwaukee or Green
Bay, because that’s where Time Warner will first test its service.
HBO introduced HBO On Demand in
2001 for its subscribers, and now aims at the youngest of its customers and
those who travel a lot, following a continuous trend of watching your favorite
show on your laptop or home PC. For the time being, the application is based on
a Microsoft Windows XP operating system, and it will become available in the
future for Apple users too.
What are the advantages of HBO
on Broadband? Well, for starters, customers will be able to program the
computer to automatically download the latest episodes and movies, as soon as
they become available. The service will have a viewing history enabled, and
will recommend programs depending on that, as well as a parental control
option, to limit access according to ratings.
The all-new application allows
programming for up to five users, and customers and will have 600 downloadable titles
each month at their disposal, for nothing more than the usual HBO monthly
subscription. “We know there is some interest in watching video on the PC. Part
of the goal is to determine the magnitude of that interest,” the executive vice
president of product management for Time Warner said to The New York Times.
Cable’s most popular channel
opens a new era in the Internet services field, expanding from simply being a
provider of cable TV and Internet, to merging the two into a service that may
prove to be a hit and appeal to the 29 million of HBO users. HBO on Broadband
will become available in the near future to subscribers all across the United
States.
