Ever since Madonna and Guy Ritchie officially announced they were getting divorced, all sorts of rumors started floating around about the kind of settlement Ritchie would get from Madonna, whose fortune is said to be worth over $450 million.
At several points he sounded like he was walking away without a dime, but in the end he scored a fairly decent settlement that includes one of the estranged couple's homes that Ritchie will keep along with their pub. Ritchie, who has an estimated $35 million fortune, was quoted by a British newspaper last month, saying their separation was "never, ever about the money."
In what Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, called "the largest payouts ever in divorce settlement," the pop singer agreed to give her ex-husband something in between $76 million and $92 million. The sum includes the value of the couple's country home Ashcombe in western England.
According to reports, Madonna's decision to give up the two British properties made sense since she has no intentions of living in the UK following her split from Ritchie, preferring her New York digs.
"She's got no interest in remaining here," U.K.-based entertainment lawyer Ambi Sitham said. "She's relocating and moving back to New York. It's money she's already paid out -- what is she going to do, try to sell the houses in a flagging market?"
While the financial side of the deal was taken care of, Rosenberg confirmed that custody arrangements for the couple's children, Rocco, 8, and David, 3, have yet to be finalized, although the two reportedly agreed to share custody. Madonna's 12-year-old daughter Lourdes from a previous relationship with personal trainer Carlos Leon, is rumored to remain in the U.S. with the singer.
Following long persistent rumors of separation and infidelity, the couple, who were married for eight years, announced their split in October. Although reasons behind their break-up were not disclosed, it has been claimed that Madonna, who acted as the petitioner, said in a sworn statement that she is divorcing Guy for his "unreasonable behavior."
However, the media continues to speculate that Madonna and sports star Alex Rodriguez are romantically involved ever since this summer when the baseball player's wife Cynthia filed for divorce amid rumors he was having and affair with the "Material Girl" singer.
Their romance rumors were furthermore fueled when Rodriguez was spotted supporting the singer at a number of concerts on her "Sticky and Sweet" tour. However, he strongly denied there was anything more than a close friendship going on between them.
Prior to their breakup, the Queen of Pop said that she and Ritchie had not lived together for six months. Since their divorce was finalized late last month, both Ritchie and Madonna have been keeping busy. Madonna is currently on her "Sticky and Sweet" tour in Brazil while Ritchie is shooting "Sherlock Holmes" in Britain.
Most recently, the 50-year-old diva told the Associated Press in a rare interview that even though she avoids thinking about her personal life because it makes her "sad," she feels very lucky and "blessed" for her professional life.
Madonna and Guy were married in December 2000 at Skibo Castle in the Scottish Highlands, just several months after Rocco was born.
