Gunshots Trouble Peaceful Atmosphere at Folklife Festival

Seattle Police is investigating the first shooting incident that occurred in the usually peaceful, three-day festival Folklife on Saturday.

Seattle police arrested a 22-year-old man for investigation of assault and seized a Glock 9-mm handgun and an ankle holster, following the shooting in which three people were hurt.

Apparently, a stray bullet was fired during a fight between two men on Saturday evening, piercing the forearm of Joshua Penaluna and then the thigh of his 21-year-old girlfriend, Sarah Thorsnes. A third man was also hit by gunfire, but police did not specify where he was shot.

Thorsnes said she was running after her puppy, who got scared after hearing the gunshot, when she noticed she had a hole in her jeans and a lot of blood on her leg. She was so shocked that she didn’t even feel the pain until she was on the ground, she said. Her puppy, a miniature Australian shepherd named Mayzee, was returned safe to Thorsnes, thanks to a person in the crowd who caught him.

The shooting was the first violent incident in the festival’s 37-year history, Rob Townsend, Folklife's executive director, said.

The usual festival-goers were shocked to see a rough side of such a mellow and hippie event. They are worried that all sorts of people come to attend the event, but not because they have anything in common with the festival’s music, but only because they want to gather together with a crowd and drink, talk and smoke.
