Restrictions to gun permits have
been long-time debated in the United States and opinions differ from one person
to another, but there is one thing that is clear and everyone share: it is
unsafe out there! Too many shooting incidents have taken too many lives in the
past years, and their incidence continues to grow.
President Bush made one first
step at the beginning of this year, when he agreed to sign a law meant to
prevent mentally ill from purchasing a gun, after the horrifying incidents at
Virginia Tech and other similar ones. It was for the first time in 14 years
that such a decision was made, but it was more than necessary for gun dealers to
perform a background check before selling a firearm.
So far, the incidents continued,
and what is even worse, innocent bystanders become victims of men or women who
don’t know how to solve their problems otherwise. Which is why some students
admitted to the fact that they didn’t feel safe anymore without a gun,
especially after Virginia Tech, and they always carried one with them, for self
defense.
Statistics confirmed that in the
United States alone, 32 people die everyday from firearms. And yes, one step
was made in requiring background checks, but how about the illegal gun dealers?
They don’t care who they sell the weapons to. That points out to the necessity of severely limiting the illegal gun sell as a starting point for a better control
of who should and who shouldn’t be allowed to own a gun.
Indeed, many citizens claim the
necessity of fire arms for protection, but at the same time, if regular people
wouldn’t be allowed to wear guns, maybe these incidents could be prevented. At
the end of the day, one thing remains uncontestable: fewer guns means fewer
victims.
