An incident involving the stabbing of three guards took
place at the maximum-security Correctional Institution in Tehachapi,
California. The attackers, two inmates, members of the Surenos, a Southern
California gang, using some homemade weapons rushed the guards in an office on
the general population yard.
In order to stop the attack, guards used pepper spray,
batons and physical force, unfortunately not ending the whole incident soon
enough.
The prison personnel, two sergeants and an officer were
taken immediately to the hospital for medical care and the two attackers also
received assistance, all involved being stabile at this point. A fourth
officer, a woman, who also took part in the episode, was also medically
assisted.
As a precaution, all of the state’s prisons will remain on
lock down until the corrections staff will conclude whether the stabbing was an
isolated incident, said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the Department of
Corrections and Rehabilitation, for the Associated Press.
One of the attackers was serving a 117-year sentence for
assault with deadly weapon and attempted murder and the other a 25-year
sentence for first-degree murder, as stated by the AP.
The prison was
initially built in 1933 to house about 2,800 female inmates, but at this point
“accommodates” over 4,705 male inmates. It is located 40 miles southeast of
Bakersfield in Kern Country and the last major event here took place in
February 2005 and involved over 400 black and Hispanic inmates.
The incident will not be taken lightly and efforts are sure
to be made in order to prevent such events from taking place.
