The spiciest same-sex relationship on TV is coming to an end,
as “Grey’s Anatomy” has parted ways with Brooke Smith and her character on the
show, Dr. Erica Hahn.
The 41-year-old actress was given the axe, as her final
appearance on the ABC medical drama will take place in this Thursday’s episode
of “Grey’s Anatomy,” the network announced on Monday.
Thus, the mushrooming romantic story between Dr. Calliope
Torres (Sara Ramirez) and heart surgeon Erica Hahn will be brought to a
standstill in a rather abrupt manner, although the series’ creator and
executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, explained in a statement that the breakup
would have a decisive influence on Callie’s attitude toward life, offering as
an example the impact Dr. Preston Burke’s (played by former cast member Isaiah
Washington) departure had on his fiancée, Christina Yang, impersonated by
Sandra Oh.
Shonda Rhimes said that Brooke Smith was not dismissed
because she was filling the shoes of a lesbian, as such a character did not
represent a major problem for the show. However, the creator explained that
Brooke Smith and Sara Ramirez’s fictional personas failed to spark “magic and
chemistry,” and proved that Seattle
Grace Hospital’s
same-sex relationship had, in fact, no future.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Brooke Smith said
that she was very thrilled by the nature of relationship her character was
planned to have with Callie Torres. She explained that she had high
expectations with regard to the blooming romance between the two women and that
she was very disappointed and puzzled when she was announced that Dr. Erica
Hahn would be written off.
Moreover, the actress told the source that her final scene
in “Grey’s Anatomy” features the top heart surgeon heading to her car to be
never seen again. She added that Sara Ramirez was also shocked when she heard
the news.
Mary McDonnell of “Battlestar Galactica” is due to join the
show on November 13 as a heart surgeon, while “Alias’” Mellisa George will also
start her saving-lives mission during the same episode. Melissa George will
reportedly play Sadie, an old friend of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who
happens to be a bisexual. Although the new intern will flirt with Callie at
first, they won’t have a serious relationship, E! Online cited an unnamed
source as saying.
Since ABC downgraded Rebecca Romjin, who plays transgender
Alexis Meade in “Ugly Betty,” from regular character to recurring character at
the end of the series’ last season, we might as well figure out that the
network has a problem with unconventional characters. If this is the reason why
they made these changes, I think they are looking into the problem from a not
very reasonable point of view.
