Male fans of “Grey’s Anatomy” got scared on Friday night after one of the doctors in the show got involved in an embarrassing and painful condition. While enjoying closet sex with Lexie Grey in last night’s episode, Dr. Mark Sloan suffered a penile fracture, which had left many of the viewers eager to find more about the injury on the Internet.
“Penile fracture” or “broken penis” were among the most searched keywords as many men asked if this can be really happening while having sex. Dr. Daniel Ronel, a plastic surgeon from Santa Fe, New Mexico, stated that this condition is possible and that he had treated it many times.
He added that reports show about 2,000 cases take place every year, but this might mean that off the record there are more than 10,000 cases each year. The cause for the lack of reports on this issue is that it’s very embarrassing, thus leaving the problem very underreported.
Ronel said that the most common situations during which the penis might suffer a fracture are the ones involving sexual intercourse, trauma, such as accidents or masturbation. Even if the organ has no bones inside it, it can break when it is engorged and bent sideways. This way, the bent fractures the spongy areas on the sides.
Dr. Salvatore Giorgianni, pharmacologist and expert on men's sexual health, also stated that this kind of fracture takes place when the penis is bent, but we can’t exactly talk about a fracture, but about a penile trauma. Jack Mydlo, professor and chairman of the department of urology at Temple University School of Medicine, blamed the men feeling embarrassed and thus they rather stay in bed and take Tylenol than going to the hospital.
