Actor Patrick Dempsey seems to like the medical field not only
in Grey’s Anatomy but also in real life. In this sense, he has donated $250,000
from his own pocket to open a cancer center carrying his name in his hometown, Lewiston in Maine.
The Patrick
Dempsey Center
for Cancer & Healing is scheduled to open March 31 and designed to
provide education and support programs for cancer patients and their families.
Dempsey, 42, created the center in honor of his mother,
Amanda, who was successfully treated for ovarian cancer at the hospital ten
years ago and is now in remission. He reminded being helpless when he first
found out about his mother’s disease, because there was not sufficient
information at the time.
“For a family to get a cancer diagnosis is devastating, and
all the information out there can be overwhelming. A lot of the websites I went
to just didn’t have enough information. So, I talked to my sister about a place
where people could go for all this type of information and help. Knowledge is
power,” Dempsey said at a press conference Monday, according to E! Online.
His sister, who is currently working at the hospital, will
run the center.
Dempsey’s contribution to medical fields will not end here. He
also plans to take part in its public education campaign about cancer
prevention and detection.
