Several high-profile movies, including Clint Eastwood’s
“Gran Torino,” Judd Apatow’s “Funny People” and Michael Newell’s “Prince of
Persia” have already started production or are about to start, despite talks of
an actors’ strike in Hollywood.
Trade paper Variety reports that several major projects are already
underway despite the SAG contract being expired.
Among these are Warner Bros.’ “Gran Torino,” directed and
starring Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood. Filming has already started in Michigan.
“Angels & Demons,” Sony’s adaptation of the Dan Brown
best-selling novel of the same name, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom
Hanks, has been shooting in Los Angeles.
Tom Hanks also starred in the adaptation of “The Da Vinci
Code,” alongside Audrey Tautou, in 2006, as Professor Robert Langdon, a role he
reprises in the upcoming prequel.
Another movie currently in production has actors Ben
Stiller, Robin Williams and Dick Van Dyke reunited with director Shawn Levy for
“Night at the Museum II: Escape From the Smithsonian,” sequel to 2006’s “Night at
the Museum.” The Fox film has been shooting in Vancouver, per Variety.
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is also currently
shooting under direction from Michael Bay, but then again, this has become
general knowledge following star Shia LaBeouf’s car accident Sunday and his
subsequent break from shooting while he recovers from extensive surgery to his
left hand.
“Funny People,” a Judd Apatow project at Universal, is
scheduled to start lensing in September, while Disney’s “Prince of Persia,”
starring Jake Gyllenhaal, began filming last week in Morocco although the release date
was postponed by a year.
Warner Bros. president Alan Horn told Daily Variety, “We’re
hopeful that there will be a deal with actors, but we have no choice but to
proceed. We can’t be in a position where we don’t have movies.”
