Government Toxicologists Claim Bisphenol Might Be Harmful

Scientists with the National Toxicology Program have again voiced concerns that the controversial chemical known by the name of bisphenol A, used in the manufacturing of baby bottles, can linings and other similar items, might be harmful for babies.

The government group, which includes scientists from the National Institutes of Health and other agencies, said that it cannot rule out that the chemical might affect the brain and hormonal systems of infants and children. The National Toxicology Program scientists say that more studies are needed to ensure the safety of bisphenol, because at the moment one cannot dismiss the possibility that real harm may result from exposure to the chemical.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Toys "R" Us Inc., among others, have already announced they are phasing out baby bottles containing bisphenol A. Experts said that they observed developmental changes occurring in some animal studies at BPA exposure levels similar to those experienced by humans.

Meanwhile, the FDA had previously stated that bisphenol A was safe, but then said it would revisit that statement after National Toxicology Program report which concluded that there might be “some concern” about it when it comes to infants. The FDA will organize A meeting on Sept. 16 in Rockville, Maryland, which is supposed to bring some light to this issue. There the FDA's Science Board will discuss the issue with the experts from The National Toxicology Program.

Bisphenol A is a synthetic hormone that has been shown to leach out of a certain type of plastic when heated, endangering the health of consumers. Hard polycarbonate plastic is used in baby bottles, toddler cups, water bottles and other recipients.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic compound used as a building block to several important polymers and polymer additives. To some degree, it mimics estrogen. Bisphenols have also been used as antioxidants in cosmetics and foods. San Francisco banned it in products for young children effective December 2006, but the ban was not enforced and was taken back in May 2007.
