Gourmet Boutique Recalls Meat over Listeriosis Concerns

A New York food company recalled 286,320 pounds of beef, pork, turkey and chicken products over possible listeria contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Saturday.

Listeria is a bacterium which can cause listeriosis, and can be potentially fatal. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea and can lead to the death of babies and people with weakened immune systems.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, says the recall includes several different brands of fresh frozen products made by Gourmet Boutique of Queens. The recall follows an inspection by the USDA food inspectors in Florida, where they found the bacteria in a sample of its products, the New York Times reports.

The recalled products were sold under the names Gourmet Boutique Curry Chicken Salad, Gourmet Boutique Turkey Club Twister and Jan’s Buffalo Bob tortilla wrap sandwiches.

Frozen foods included in the recall were Archer Farms mini beef burritos, pulled-pork burritos and chicken burritos. Salad products were also among products that were recalled. They were produced between April 19 and April 24, while the frozen products were produced between Oct. 23 and April 23, the USDA said.

The fresh food products had best-before dates of May 2 and May 3.

Gourmet Boutique also recalled 7,000 pounds of meat in 10 states back in March due to the same possible contamination.

The company refused to comment on the recall.
