Google’s New Offices Appliance Can Search 10 Million Docs

Google Inc, the largest American company (by market capitalization) that is not part of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, announced on Tuesday that it is now offering an upgraded version of the hardware appliance made for businesses and government organizations for Google-style Web search of office documents.

In a statement, the company which leads the Web search market said that the latest-developed version of the Google Search Appliance is able to store up to 10 million documents in a single box. Google’s new product, a pizza-sized box that holds a self-contained search system for managing an organization's electronic files, has the same capacity as a previous version that came in a five-box rack.

The new Search Appliance also features a personalized search experience, e-mail alerts for topics and documents of interest that employees can subscribe to and a spellchecker for French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch. The appliances’ search services are powered by Google software and run on storage hardware from Dell Inc.

The appliances are very helpful for staff searching for documents in corporate store houses such as EMC Corp's Documentum, IBM's FileNet, Open Text's LiveLink and Microsoft Corp's SharePoint.

The new product’s latest model also includes greater encryption capability and the facility for Google Alerts to notify users when new documents are stored on the network by colleagues.
Google Search Appliances can be managed in 27 languages as Turkish, Czech, Vietnamese and Portuguese were added.

"Taking Google's core search technology and optimizing it for business use, the Google Search Appliance provides universal search across a variety of internal and external sources—including file shares, intranets, databases, applications, hosted services and content management systems," according to a release on Google's Web site.

When it comes to security and control features, the new product also includes native support for Kerberos (enables silent authentication), metadata biasing and advanced reporting features and the list goes on. The Search Appliance can be acquired through Ingram Micro.

Google stated that they are the market leader in enterprise, as well as consumer, search. However, it is hard to verify that statement because Google refuses to reveal revenue for the business.
