One of the hottest topics related to Google these days is
its decision to release an app for the iPhone. Its Google Mobile App enables
searches on the mobile device just by voice queries. These new voice searches
represent a great technological upgrade awaited by many, as the technology is
expected to significantly speed up the process and also provide a fun
experience.
Google had scheduled the release for a certain date but Apple’s
approval format demanded a careful inspection of the app, which led to the
delay of its availability. Users were able to download the free app from
Apple’s App Store staring yesterday and the response so far is extremely
positive.
The app uses the iPhone’s location function and provides
results taking this aspect into consideration. For example, if a user demands a
search for ‘movie times’ or ‘restaurant,’ it will be enough for the device to
come up with all the options and details from the area that the user is in.
The voice recognition process is not perfect and there will
be certain moments when the search will not lead to the needed results. Still,
it appears to have close to 90 percent success rate, especially for the
customers using a North American accent and it also helps if the request is
made in a quiet environment, in order to sent the message as clear as possible;
any interference could lead to word confusions which will demand a new search
action.
For those users not interested in the function, there is
also the traditional way of accessing Google’s search engines. Users will
receive suggestions in the vertical list as they will begin to type, and once
the Web site link is pressed, they will be taken directly to the selected page.
AppScout announced the completion of a test session for
Google’s new app which reached the conclusion that the service is “easy, quick,
and intuitive.”
Computerworld also conducted a series of tests and according
to the results, the service managed to recognize correctly the words and
phrases in about 80 percent of the cases. The tests were made in a quiet
environment while speaking slowly and distinctly. The testers gave it a ‘thumbs
up,’ even though they underlined the above mentioned shortcomings.
Google’s Mobile App will probably become a very popular
download on Apple’s App Store, because when it comes to voice recognition
services, it is without a doubt the best one available at this point.
Google prepared the release of its app on the iPhone because
its officials considered that it is in the customers’ best interest to release
such a popular service on a product which recorded huge sales and is widely
spread on the market. Still, the company might also be planning a release of
the app, the same or an improved version, for its own G1 device or for the
upcoming G2 phone. For now, the feedback must be analyzed and the flaws
reported must be fixed.
