Sergey Brin, Google’s co-founder, plans to enjoy himself in
the year 2011 by taking a trip to the International Space Station. The millionaire already deposited $5
million in order to make sure that his seat will not be given away.
The full story behind the news involves a Virginia-based
company, Space Adventures which facilitates space rides to the International
Space Station for wealthy customers on Russian Soyuz rockets. The company plans
on buying a Soyuz flight in 2011, with the possibility of buying more, and Brin’s
deposit could also be considered an investment in the company’s future plans
and development.
The plan involves a trip with a Soyuz rocket which will
visit the International Space Station and offer a brand new experience for its
passengers.
Brin said in a statement presented by the New York Times
that he is a big believer in the exploration development and commercial
potential of the space frontier and that he is very excited about the possibility
of going into space.
Space Adventures is responsible
so far for five such vacations and not everyone is thrilled about the prospects
of this activity. Vitaly Lopota, the president of Energia, the Russian
spacecraft company, recently expressed his thoughts about the space tourism business,
saying that the I.S.S. was built for serving the need of the people on Earth
and not for serving the need of amusement.
So far, even though the exact numbers haven’t been disclosed,
the space trips’ costs add up to over $20 million.
