Google Inc will soon extend its in-depth reach by releasing its Android operating system for mobile phones. The OS will hit the market in the following weeks and it will be carried by T-Mobile in a handset of HTC, the well-known Taiwanese smart phone maker. It is still unknown which handset it will use.
The Android phone will crash with already successful smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry and the devices that run on Nokia’s Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OSs.
However, some market experts don’t expect Google’s Android to have the same impact the iPhone had. Off course, all the Google market entries in its quite short history were more or less success stories although the high degree of competitiveness, but on the smartphone market this degree is sky high.
On the other hand, other voices of the industry expect the Google Android phone to outpace the iPhone – the “it” smartphone at the moment.
Google said it intends to make the Android – dubbed Google “Dream” phone - an open-source platform that will boost the designing of mobile phones. First of all, the Android will encourage innovation by permitting outside software developers to create and perfect mobile programs and services – a policy radically different than Apple’s tight grip on the iPhone's hardware and software.
However, Google’s open-source development policy is less likely to be a smash among consumers.
Google’s Android phone will be released by T-Mobile TMOG.UL in New York on September 23.
At the moment, the US smartphone market is dominated by Research In Motion’s mobile OS with 41%, Apple has a 28% piece of the pie. Windows Mobile has 21 % and Palm 9%, according to a February 2008 report by Canalys consulting.
