Amid rumors of talks between Web search giant Google and micro blogging site Twitter for a possible purchase of the latter, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone reportedly acknowledged that the two companies are in talks, but underlined the fact that Twitter plans to remain an independent company.
In a blog post titled “Sometimes We Talk,” Stone kind of said: “What’s with all the fuss? We’re just talking…” Stone said that it should come as no surprise the fact that Twitter sometimes engages in discussions with other companies. He did not give names of companies or topics that were or are discussed.
Biz Stone, who already sold a company to Google in 2003 (I’m talking about Blogger), emphasized that Twitter’s goal is “to build a profitable, independent company." Stone said his inbox was flooded with message asking him about the rumored talks for a Twitter acquisition by Google.
"We're just getting started," Stone said, referring to Twitter, of course.
The rumors that Google will buy Twitter and the companies are in “advanced stages” of negotiations were first posted by TechCrunch and the subject immediately exploded on the tech blogosphere.
According to that report, the Google-Twitter deal was as good as done. The price wasn’t known yet, but it should be well above $250 million, TechCrunch's Michael Arrington stated.
However, other sources dismissed the rumors as….well…rumors. BoomTown’s Kara Swisher wrote a report in which she underlined the fact that Google was NOT in advanced talks to buy Twitter and the TechCrunch’s report was ”inaccurate.” The companies are actually holding only "product-related discussions" about search-related issues, she said.
