Google announced its decision to push its business interests
a bit further, with the release of a new software application which will allow
users to move several materials from their PCs to their television, for a
better viewing experience.
The new app is called the Google Media Server and represents
a much more developed version of the Google Desktop suite, using its technology
and fading out the boundaries between mobile phones, televisions and Internet.
William Madway, a marketing professor at the Villanova
School of Business, talked to TechNewsWorld about Google’s initiative,
saying that it is a very interesting process, as the general tendency nowadays is
to move all sorts of contents from stationary devices to PCs and not the other
way around. Still, it is considered a very smart move with great potential for
further development.
This is not the first attempt of working with TV sets, as
companies such as Apple TV, Hulu, SlingMedia and TiVo each released products presenting
their own vision about the platforms’ merger. Such solutions have been
requested and attempted for many years, as a result of the massive programs - boom
on TV and over the Internet, with thousands of new media files, shows, movies,
music, games and sports, each with a different air-time.
After installing the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), similar
to the devices found on Sony's PlayStation 3 and on Microsoft's Xbox 360, the
users will be able to access and view all their PC-stored media, including
photos, movies and music, on the TV set.
The strategy involves Google’s expansion plans of reaching as
many different market areas as possible, operating with mobile devices, TVs and
PCs.
