Google Incorporated is officially refuting the rumors that have been flooding the web, saying that the company’s Google Earth software had spotted the sunken city of Atlantis off the coast of Africa.
For the time being, all anyone knows about what happened that gave rise to the speculations is that a British aeronautical engineer was using Google’s new service Google Earth 5.0, which has added undersea information, when he saw something similar to a street grid 600 miles west of the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa.
Moreover, United Kingdom’s Press Association reported that the region the engineer had located was approximately the size of Wales.
When the media got wind of the finding, the rumors started spreading like wildfire that Atlantis had been discovered, The Telegraph, which first reported the story, having also given the exact coordinates, 31 15'15.53N, 24 15'30.53W.
Nevertheless, in a statement released with regards to the discovery, Google said that even though Google Earth had shed light upon many an exquisite finding, including a forest in Mozambique inhabited by previously undocumented species and the debris from an ancient Roman villa, the recent discovery had been merely the data collection process’s doing.
Furthermore, the company said that sea floor terrain data was gathered from boats that used sonar in order to measure the sea floor, adding that the lines only gave info concerning the path of the boat as it sought to collect data.
Legendary island city Atlantis was first mentioned by Plato, who stated it was located near North Africa, adding that it disappeared when it sank into the ocean.
