Mountain View search giant Google Inc. has acquired South
Korean blog company Tatter and Company, in a move likely to extend Google’s
reach on the Asian market. Google confirmed the announcement made by the South
Korean company on its blog; however, the financial terms have not been
disclosed.
“We are excited to welcome Tatter and Company’s engineering
team to Google Korea,” a Google spokesperson said in an email. “Acquiring
Tatter and Company will allow us to enhance our online publishing tools in
Korea, benefiting a large number of users who already depend on and enjoy
Google and Tatter and Company’s products.”
The move shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering Google is
lagging behind on the Korean market, compared to other online rivals. Although Google
is the global leader on the search market, and Korea is one of the largest
markets in the world, with a significant number of Internet users, it appears
that the search giant isn’t exactly successful in this part of the world.
While the Koreans are looking forward to see a stronger
Google presence on their market, the search giant appears to be on a quest this
year of reaching specific markets that show a “Google deficit.” In July this
year, Google acquired a Russian online advertising company for $140 million.
Chang-Won Kim and Chester Roh, who are the creators of Tatter
and Company, are mainly known for creating the company’s blogging service
called TextCube. As Google already owns Blogger, a blogging platform acquired back
in 2003, the effects on both blogging services still remain to be seen.
