Google Cofounder Launches Blog by Revealing His Parkinson’s Predisposition

Sergey Brin, one of Google’s co-founders, has launched his personal blog. The first of Google’s three executives to launch his persona blog did it by revealing that he is predisposed to develop Parkinson's disease.

Brin decided to check if he was genetically predisposed to the disease because his mother has it and also due to the fact that his wife insisted he should. Anne Brin is a co-founder of DNA startup 23andMe which runs genetic tests and can determine whether someone is predisposed to various diseases.

Sergey Brin announced the blogosphere about his pre-disposition to develop Parkinson’s after his wife’s 23andMe tested and analyzed his genetic samples. In his recently-launched blog, Brin notes that researchers have been working on the genes which usually cause Parkinson’s - a G2019S gene mutation.

“When my wife asked me to look up [the gene mutation] in my raw data, I viewed it mostly as entertainment. But, of course, I learned something very important to me - I carry the G2019S mutation and when my mother checked her account, she saw she carries it too," Brin wrote on his blog. He also said that his aunt suffers from Parkinson’s as well.

The fact that he carries the G2019S mutation means that Brin is exposed to a much higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. More precisely, he is between 20% and 80% more likely to develop the disease than a person who doesn’t carry the above-mentioned gene mutation.

However, this is not only bad news. By knowing his disease predisposition, Brin can also make efforts in order to avoid developing Parkinson’s. Medical researchers said that exercising helps prevent Parkinson’s.

“I also have the opportunity to perform and support research into this disease long before it may affect me," Brin added.
