Google announced on Tuesday that they have a partnership
with several publishers to include a collection of over 1 million articles that
appeared years ago. The magazine search function is available via Google’s Book
Search in the Advanced Preferences tab. Yet, the web search company plans to
include magazine articles in general search results in the near future.
The dozens of articles were digitally scanned in a similar
manner used when Google launched Book Search. Images of the articles were taken
and the text contained in them was converted into digital characters through a
text recognition software. Searching through the magazines reveals old articles
from the New York Magazine, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science and Men’s
Health. All the places that are named in an article are highlighted and
clicking them brings Google Maps alongside of the page, showing the exact
location of the event.
Google’s decision to index content from magazines was
immediately given a positive response from several publishers as they are going
to receive an amount of Google’s income from advertisements. The ads are placed
at the side of the articles, along with links directing to the publishers’ web
site.
The inclusion of paper magazines in Google’s web searches is
only one of the steps the company in Mountain
View did to bring non-internet sources on the web in
the last few years. As an example, along with book and magazine searches,
Google has indexed an entire archive of photos from Life magazine and thousands
of issues of a number of newspapers.
