Goodbye Conan O達rien, Hello Jimmy Fallon

Marking the end of an era in late-night TV comedy, Conan O'Brien’s “Late Night” show will sign off Friday after 16 years and 2,725 episodes, and make room for Saturday Night Live’s Jimmy Fallon, who already has two test shows under his belt.

“I really want this,” Fallon told reporters in a conference call Thursday. “I'm not nervous anymore. I'm anxious, I'm excited, I'm ready to go on tomorrow night. If NBC needs me, I'm ready.”

Fallon’s show “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” is set to premiere on March 2, and scheduled to join the new host on his first day are show-biz heavyweights Robert De Niro and Van Morrison, who will be performing.

Producer Michael Shoemaker said he was confident Fallon and De Niro will make a great show since the two know each other well since working together on numerous skits on SNL.

Other guests scheduled for Fallon’s first week, include former SNL castmate Tina Fey, Jon Bon Jovi and Santigold (March 3); Cameron Diaz and Billy Crudup (March 4); Serena Williams, Ludacris and Donald Trump (March 5); and Drew Barrymore and Mario Batali (March 6).

“These [guests] aren't going to be someone Jimmy has never met,” Shoemaker noted. “It really wasn't for a 'comfort level' thing - he just happens to know amazing people.”

Trying to bring some novelty to the show, Fallon said he won’t ignore the younger audiences, nor the people whose lives involve a lot of working with computers and the Internet. His list of topics will include gadgets, video games and cell phones, while three members of his staff, who are bloggers, will keep an updated Web site. Fallon’s on-set desk will also feature a computer.

In the meantime, O’Brien will move to L.A. to take over “The Tonight Show” from Jay Leno in June. Leno will step down in May.
