Thursday
morning, the nominations for the 66th annual Golden Globes were revealed,
giving rise to much excitement and happiness among the ones who received a nod,
but maybe to disappointment also, for those who were left out this year.
The nominations for best motion picture drama were earned by
„The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” „Frost/Nixon,” „The
Reader,” and „Slumdog Millionaire.”
As for the best motion picture, the comedy or
musical category, the movies that got a nod were „Burn After Reading,” „Happy-Go-Lucky,”
„In Bruges,” „Mamma Mia!” and „Vicky Christina Barcelona.”
The directors who will be seating on
the edge of their chair during the 2009 ceremony will be Danny Boyle, for the
aforementioned „Slumdog Millionaire,” Stephen Daldry for „The Reader,” David
Fincher for „Benjamin Button,” Ron Howard for „Frost/Nixon” and Sam Mendes for „Revolutionary
Road.”
Lining up for a best actor award are Leonardo
DiCaprio, Frank Langella, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt and Mickey Rourke, for the drama
section, while for the comedy or musical one, the nominees were Javier Bardem, Colin
Farrell, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson and Dustin Hoffman.
The actresses who won’t be needing to add
the blush to their make-up kit the night the winners will be announced, since
they’ll already be blushing and radiating with excitement, are Anne Hathaway, Angelina
Jolie, Meryl Streep, Kristin Scott Thomas and Kate Winslet-for drama-and Rebecca
Hall, Sally Hawkins, Frances McDormand, Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson, for
comedy or musical.
Still, let’s not forget the ones who
received a nod for best supporting actor and actress, respectively. The ladies
are Amy Adams, Penelope Cruz, Viola Davis, Marisa Tomei and yet again Kate
Winslet, while the gentlemen, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Ralph Fiennes, Philip
Seymour Hoffman and Heath Ledger. The latter received his nomination for his
role in „The Dark Knight” posthumously, since on January 22 this year, the
28-year-old actor died of prescription medication overdose. Ledger
earned an Academy Award nomination for best leading actor back in 2005, for his
portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the movie „Brokeback Mountain,” which made him the
ninth youngest nominee for a Best Actor Oscar.
For his performance as Del Mar, who has a love affair with rodeo
rider Jack Twist, played by actor
Jake Gyllenhaal in “Brokeback,”
Heath Ledger also received a Golden Globe best actor in drama nomination one
year later, in 2006.
In the 2008
production “The Dark Knight,” part of director Christopher Nolan’s Batman
series, Ledger played the character Joker, having completed his work on the
movie in October 2007.
The film
was released in July 2008, paying tribute to the actor who had been considered
one of the best in his generation. It came into much critical acclaim,
especially for Ledger’s performance, having also broken several box office records.
After this
year, the Golden Globe Awards were not telecast live, by virtue of the 2007–2008
Writers Guild of America strike,
with writers having threatened to picket the event, rendering media outlets
with the sole possibility of broadcasting the 31 minute time-frame during which
the winners were announced, on January 11, 2009, the 66th edition of the
ceremony will air at 8 p.m. on NBC from the Beverly Hilton.
