Go to the Gym to Look Good for 2009! Fitness Centers Offer Discounts to Attract Members

Fitness centers are working to attract new members for 2009. According to statistics released by the U.S. Department of Heath and Human Services, nearly 40 percent of adults across the country admit they are not physically active. The “Healthy People 2010” objectives, also released by the US Department of Health and Human Services, recommend a half hour of moderate activity at least five days a week or a vigorous 20-minute workout three times weekly.

Many fitness centers have decided to cut their prices significantly during the first month of the year, one of the busiest periods for gyms, as people try to lose weight after the winter holidays. This year, local gyms are feeling the effects of the economic crisis as some members are deciding not to renew. Gyms are using special offers to keep their customers coming, such as cutting prices, big discounts, extra services like additional free extra working days.

Many clubs say that a gym membership can be beneficial despite the cost because the customer can come to the gym and find an entire network of friends and relationships.
Surveys have shown that almost 50 percent of Americans say losing weight will be their New Year’s resolution for 2009. People gain weight during the winter holidays and want to look good for the new year. 41.5 million Americans are members of some type of health club or gym, according to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association.

According to government guidelines, adults need somewhere between one and two hours of moderate exercise per week, while children and adolescents need approximately one hour per day. Exercise helps people lose weight, reduces stress and increases metabolism.
