A 12-year old New York City girl is almost unscathed after falling 180 feet down a chimney in Manhattan. Both her legs were broken, but she was otherwise apparently in good shape. Only two feet of soot and dust cushioned her fall, with nothing else to break her fall, according to Grace’s father, Steve Berger, 52, who is a jazz musician. Berger said it's a miracle that his daughter was still alive following the 14 storey fall.
Rescuers going into the building's boiler room were expecting to find carnage, but instead they found Grace waiting for them, covered completely in soot and yelling that she broke her leg.
The accident took place Thursday night at the Westbeth Artists Housing complex that houses artists. Grace was apparently playing on the roof, and climbed the ladder to the chimney top and fell into the hole right down 180 feet to the building's basement.
Grace was recovering at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital Center on Saturday, allegedly in fair condition, with a dislocated hip and possible fractures on both legs. It looks like she will soon be back drumming. She was featured in a 2006 AP article about the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls in Manhattan, when she started her own band.
